Baptism:

Congratulations as you prepare for the Sacrament of Baptism! We look forward to helping your family prepare for and celebrate this special sacrament of initiation into the life of the Church and Saint John Vianney Parish.

What are parents' requirements prior to their child's baptism?

Parents ought to be registered and actively participating members of Saint John Vianney Church. If you are members of another parish, you are to follow the requirements of your local parish and also submit a letter giving your pastor's permission for the baptism to take place at Saint John Vianney.

Is there a baptism class to attend?

Yes. We encourage parents and godparents to attend this class even before the birth of your child. It is offered every month in conjunction with Our Lady of Lourdes Church. See the schedule below for the exact dates and times.
Parents who have attended the class within the past three years are not required to attend the class.

Classes are held on Saturday mornings, 9:00-11:00am, alternating months at Our Lady of Lourdes, 1506 Brown St., Bettendorf (enter through their Gathering Space doors closest to the school) and Saint John Vianney Church, 4097 18th St., Bettendorf (use the NW Entrance to McGrath Rooms 6 & 7).

How are baptisms scheduled?

Contact Julie Mishler at 332-7910 or via email at office@sjvbett.org to schedule your child's baptism.

When can my child be baptized?

Baptisms can be celebrated on most weekends of the year, unless there is a major parish function. The baptism can be scheduled during any of the weekend Masses - or after the Saturday 4:30 pm Mass and the Sunday 11:00 am Mass.

How is my child baptized?

Baptism is celebrated either by the immersion of your child into the font - or the pouring of water over the forehead of your child. The water of the font is heated to a delightful 95 degrees.

What should my child wear?

Since baptism celebrates rebirth, we encourage your child to wear WHITE.

How many families may present their child for baptism?

Due to the number of families requesting baptism, we may schedule one other family at the same time as your child's baptism.

How is baptism celebrated during Mass?

The Rite of Baptism is divided into several parts. Parents, Godparents and Child may enter the church with the rest of the Entrance Procession. After the greeting, Parents and Godparents are introduced to the assembly and asked two questions: "What is the name of your child?" and "Why do you wish to have your child baptized?" The Liturgy of the Word follows. The actual baptism takes place following the shortened homily. Parents may also present the gifts of Bread and Wine during the Offertory procession.

Who baptizes children at St. John Vianney?

When celebrated during Mass, the priest-presider baptizes your child. When celebrated after Mass, either the priest-presider or deacon may baptize your child.

My older child has not been baptized. What should we do?

We can tailor a special preparation process for a child who has reached the age of reason. Contact Father Vrba to arrange a parent meeting to discuss the possibilities.

Can we videotape and/or photograph during the baptism?

Absolutely!

Is there a fee for baptism?

Saint John Vianney Church does not charge a fee for any sacrament.
